New covers revealed; ARC readers wanted

New covers for the Neighborly Affection series and Gentleman series books by M.Q. Barber as of 2020.
Moving from traditional publishing to indie publishing means new covers for all of the books in the Neighborly Affection and Gentleman series. I’m super-excited to show these off!

So far, 2020 isn’t turning out anything like what I expected it to be — and I’m guessing that’s true for you, too. I hope that wherever you are in the world, you are safe and well. I hope you have enough food to eat and a roof over your head, and especially that the ones you love are safe by your side.

I’m in my fourth week of working from home, which has thrilled the dog, because she can’t reach the treat shelf by herself. So the day job continues, and I watch my neighbors walk their children and their dogs outside the front window while I work.

But when I’m not working for the day job, I’m putting all of my effort into making the transition from traditionally published author to indie author. And on that front, at least, it’s been a good year so far. After a few hiccups with the publisher, I finally have the rights back to all of my books.

Indie progress

In the last few weeks, I’ve gotten those rights back, gotten new covers for all of the existing books, and gotten five books proofread and formatted to go back on sale. I’ve also had the next book — Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories: A Neighborly Affection Companion — out to my editor and gotten it back. So I am extremely pleased to say that I’m on track to meet my goals for the first half of the year: get all of the existing books back on sale and release a new one.

First, let me give you a better look at those new covers! I’m super-excited with these. I wanted each series to have its own mood and tone, a little softer for the Gentleman books and edgier for the Neighborly Affection series. And I’m so, so thrilled that my cover artist for the Neighborly Affection series found a photo series that will let all of the books have the same trio standing in for Henry, Alice, and Jay.

I’m starting to load the books at the online booksellers, so you could see the first ones showing up within the next week. My goal is to have all of them back on sale, with the new covers, by May 15.

That’s because just a couple of weeks later I want to release the new book, Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories: A Neighborly Affection Companion. But before I do that, I want to share it with some of you lovely readers who have been following the trio’s journey for a good long while now.

ARC readers

So I will be putting together a sign-up form for advance reader copies (ARCs). I can’t guarantee that everyone who signs up will get an early copy of the book, but everybody who signs up will have a chance at one. Details on how to sign up for an ARC and be a reader-reviewer will be in the April newsletter later this month.

I’m only opening the ARC opportunity to newsletter subscribers, so if you’re not already on the list, please make sure you sign up soon! The newsletter will go out in the second half of April, and ARCs will hopefully go out in early May.

Subscribers will also get the first look at the cover for Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories in the April newsletter.

A special note for long-time readers of the Neighborly Affection series: I’ll be including the short story “Three-Way Tie” in the collection with Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories! If you’ve been unable to get a copy of “Three-Way Tie” because you don’t use Amazon/Kindle, this will be your opportunity to get that story — along with 41 others.

  1. New covers are great! Good luck with the re-releases.
I look forward to Tuesdays with Jay, too. Does this mean you’ve finished or will this book have more than you shared with your newsletter subscribers?

    • Thanks! I’ve been learning to decipher the screens for uploading the books this week, LOL. For Tuesdays with Jay, so far we’ve had 31 stories go out in the newsletter, but the book will have more that haven’t been seen anywhere yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. love the new covers! they actually make me sad that i already own the e-books. I actually discovered your work on Scribd initially, are you planning on putting your work back on there?

    • Oh, cool, Anne! I think my publisher had a deal with Scribd at one point, so that’s probably why the books were there and then not. I’ll have to investigate the possibility now that I’m on my own. ๐Ÿ™‚

And I’m delighted that you like the new covers!

Love the new covers, and love Tuesdays with Jay. So looking forward to your new books!

    • Thanks, Susan! It’s been a long stretch of other things crowding out the writing time in my life, but I’ve been on a good streak so far this year. Hoping not to jinx it! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. I seriously canโ€™t wait for your new books. If I had physical copies and not the e copies they would have been a worn out with all the times Iโ€™ve read them. Keep writing. You have such a gift for creating deep and vivid characters. Even when we donโ€™t know what theyโ€™re thinking thereโ€™s so many clues to understanding them in your writing. I would live to see more from Henryโ€™s point of view. Thereโ€™s so much more to him and I feel youโ€™ve only scratched the surface.

    • I am super-excited that you said that, Tiki! The book I’m writing now, which will hopefully be ready by the end of the year, will have some sections from Henry’s perspective. Character is my favorite part of writing — getting to really think deeply about how the characters think, feel, behave, react, etc. I just love it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Beautiful new covers!
I’m very eager for the new book release. Love the stories, and I’m thrilled your new venture is going well. PLEASE, keep those creative juices flowingโฃ

  6. I love the new covers! Looking forward to more Jay and more MQ!

  7. As an avid M.Q. reader/supporter I adore the new covers. I truly love our Henry, Jay, and Alice, and though we each have our own mental picture of them…these are great. Tuesdays with Jay are such a joy…am looking forward to the companion. Know we are waiting with bated breath for all the new adventures you have ahead for us.

    • Hugs, Beverly! Thanks so much for the encouragement. ๐Ÿ™‚ One thing I love about books — they’re so individual, right? We can all read the same book, but it looks and feels different in the head of each reader. I think that’s amazing. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. This series is definitely my go to whenever I need a bit of dream worthy inspiration! (Waggles eyebrows) lol. There is something about this trio!! I am excited about Tuesdays with Jay!!

  9. Excited for the new covers and for Tuesdays with Jay! Can’t wait for the next book in the Neighborly Affections series! I hope everything is going well for you and yours in the context! xx

  10. Yay!!! ๐Ÿ˜€ Congrats!
Will these be digital only? ๐Ÿ™‚

I have yet to read your Gentleman series, but I must admit that those covers really made me want to try them out ๐Ÿ˜€
    (Yes, I know, “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”.. ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

    • LOL! I love that the new covers piqued your interest, Lizette! The Gentleman books don’t have the D/s or menage that the Neighborly Affection books have, but they have the same focus that I always have — exploring the characters’ psychological/emotional struggles and how fear can sometimes keep us from moving forward. And steamy solutions for that problem. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The books will be digital at most sellers, but they’ll be available in print from Amazon. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. I dicovered your series Neighbourly affection and I greatly enjoyed them, I would love to read number five finding their balance, but I can not find it. I tried the Kobo and Amazon link on this site and the both fell me of is unavailable.

    • I’m so sorry about that, Kaat! I’ve been republishing the books now that I have them back from my former publisher. Finding Their Balance should show up again as an ebook on both sites in a week or two. <3
